FC Porto winger Ricardo Quaresma has said that the club needs to adopt a different mentality in order to start challenging for titles once again. One of the most successful clubs in Portugal, Porto finished without any major title last season. Quaresma came back to Portugal last season after several spells at clubs across Europe in the last few years. Regarded as a more talented player than Cristiano Ronaldo when the duo were coming through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon, Quaresma’s career has not progressed exactly according to plan.
In order to win his career, the former Portuguese international returned to Porto last season. However, he was unable to prevent the club from finishing the season without any major honours. Ahead of the new campaign, though, he is motivated and keen on helping the club win titles. He says that after years of unrivalled success, Porto need to find the winning combination once again. Until the 2012-13 season, Porto were the most dominant Portuguese team after winning several league titles on the bounce. The enormous success has put to them within touching distance of Benfica’s record of 33 league titles.
Porto have won 27 league titles so far. Even though they are less in terms of league success, they have won 74 major honours compared to 72 of Benfica. “We must have a different attitude compared to last year to return again to win titles. We know that the margin for error is minimal. It was not easy to digest what happened, we have to be focused and change the attitude. As my colleagues said earlier, is a Lopetegui demanding coach who knows what he wants, but we’re enjoying working with him,” said Quaresma about the upcoming campaign.
Porto are the last Portuguese club to win the Champions League and they did so under Jose Mourinho.
